Maritime music

For those who want to imagine themselves aboard a Blankenberge fishing boat or a tall sailing ship, traditional sea shanties are sung. Blankenberge’s fishing heritage is closely linked to maritime music.

Shanty

Shanties are work songs that accompanied the monotonous tasks on board. The shantyman would lead with the verses, setting the rhythm, while the crew joined in with the chorus. Anchors were hoisted, sails raised, decks scrubbed, and bilge pumps manned to the beat of the song.

Along the Flemish coast, fishermen’s songs often reflect themes such as the Iceland voyages.

North Sea Folk & Shanty Festival

On Friday 15 May and Saturday 16 May 2026, there will be continuous performances on several stages throughout the harbour area. On Saturday evening, everyone is welcome at the Festival Tent on the Barcadère for a lively jam session with all participating choirs.

In addition to the Blankenberge Shanty Choir, the festival regularly welcomes groups from France, the Netherlands and England.
