The B1 St. Pieter is a faithful replica of the authentic Blankenberge fishing boat, used by local fishermen for centuries until the early 20th century. This open fishing vessel, with its flat bottom designed for beach landings, harks back to a time when Blankenberge had no harbour — not until the second half of the 19th century.
Crafted from oak and elm, the St. Pieter measures 11 metres in length, 5 metres in width, and weighs around 20 tonnes. It is powered by two traditional lug sails, together covering about 80 m², hoisted on two masts.
In addition to this authentic rigging, a 140 hp engine was installed to comply with modern safety standards. The St. Pieter was lovingly built over seven years by a team of 40 volunteers, working during weekends in Blankenberge. In September 1999, the vessel was launched and now proudly lies at its historic berth in Blankenberges harbour. Both locals and visitors are welcome to participate in the St. Pieters programme. You can book your boat tour and experience life at sea as it once was (hoisting sails - maybe even trying a bit of fishing).
Expert guides share fascinating insights into the past and present of the fishing trade. Theres also an opportunity to taste some delicious seafood products combined with a traditional shot of jenever. This year, the St. Pieter will take part in several maritime events along the Belgian and Northern French coast. The Blankenberge barge is owned by the non-profit association VZW De Scute.
