West Quarter walking route

The West Quarter was created as a result of the spectacular expansion of Blankenberge around 1900. Until 1910, mainly fishermen lived here, but by 1930 many workers from the construction sector came here, and a little later in 1960 from the service sector and the catering industry.

Notable is the large number of houses with double entrances: one for the landlord and a larger one for the tenants, the heyday of holiday lets. Tiling and ironwork are also abundant.

The part of the West Quarter looked at more closely in this walking route is unknown and unloved. It does not exude glitz and glamour, but it is brimming with unexpected variants: art nouveau, art deco, packet boat style, streamline, modernism to social housing from the original buildings.
