In the middle of the 19th century, Blankenberge made the transition from a small fishing town to a vibrant seaside city. The Bruges–Blankenberge railway line stimulated in 1863 the breakthrough of the city as a tourist resort. Villas, hotels and beautiful public buildings such as the casino, emerged rapidly. All this, however, had an impact on the lives of the fishermen.
